Jovanka Beckles Calls for Assembly to Reject AB 84 Big-Money Campaign Move

Joining California Common Cause, the League of Women Voters of California, California Clean Money Action Fund, California Clean Money Campaign, the California League of Conservation Voters, CALPIRG, Climate Hawks, Courage Campaign, and California Democratic Party and many of its local clubs, among others, Jovanka Beckles today called for the rejection of Assembly Bill 84.

Masquerading under the guise of campaign finance reform adding transparency requirements to existing law, AB 84 raises some existing contribution limits and enables creation of new "legislative caucus committees" that can contribute to and spend large amounts of money on campaigns without regard to party endorsements.

"We need to return California government to the people," Jovanka said.

"Campaign finance reform needs to continue, but it needs genuinely to increase transparency and reduce back-door campaign finance, not open the door to massive new inflows of money and its expenditure by an even bigger range of secretive, well-connected committees and caucuses.

"A level campaign finance playing field can encourage participation and reduce cynicism; AB 84 will do the opposite."
