I am thrilled and honored to receive the Our Revolution endorsement!
I sought the endorsement because of my respect for the organization that shares my values. Like Our Revolution, I believe we must put the needs of people first.
Local labor unions understand this. That is why they have provided critical support over the years that i have dedicated myself to progressive politics. My work with and alongside union members has been, and continues to be, invaluable to our movement, to our revolution.
Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign deeply inspired me because it echoed my own reasons for first running for office in 2008. I was committed then as I am now, to making sure our government works for families and individuals. Big corporations and moneyed interests have been running things for too long at the expense of those who do not have the influence that big money can buy.
As a Richmond City Councilmember, I have been able to advance policies that positively impact the lives of thousands of people. We’ve raised the local minimum wage, established rent control, authored a Municipal ID Program, we helped to secure $90 million to significantly reduce emissions from Chevron’s refinery. We also created a model policy to “Ban the Box” – an ordinance that fights discrimination after incarceration, and that could be used throughout the state.
Critics cited these proposed policies as our “going too far” and being “too progressive.” We knew these proposed fair and just policies were long overdue and we made them a reality. Raising the minimum wage is now a mainstream idea embraced throughout the country. Rent control is being put in place in communities throughout the state, and the Ban the Box Ordinance passed out of the Assembly and is being now debated in the State Senate.
These progressive ideas all started out as radical ways in which we could help people in our community. Now they are simply seen as practical policies having a positive impact.
My career has always been about creating better lives for children, families and individuals. As a professional in the mental health field, I see the everyday struggles so many people are facing. I know that we need to create housing and to keep people in their homes. I know we have to protect our environment today and make sure we are providing a world-class education system for our children.
Of course those are not the only issues. The problems we collectively face are too large for any single person to solve, but together we can take on any challenge. In Richmond, we have demonstrated that it is possible when people come together. With your support, we can do it again in Sacramento.
Thank you to Our Revolution for this endorsement!
Thank you all for your support!
Now, let’s get back to work.
