California Latino Legislative Caucus Endorses Jovanka Beckles for AD15
SACRAMENTO — The California Latino Legislative Caucus announced it has endorsed Richmond City Councilmember Jovanka Beckles for Assembly District 15. Beckles, a Panamanian-American, is a two-term Richond City Council member and a longtime member of the Richmond Progressive Alliance.
"We are proud to endorse Jovanka Beckles in her campaign for the Assembly," said Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus. "Jovanka is the embodiment of the California dream. Like many Californians, her roots are as an immigrant, whose family came here for in search of a better life. She worked hard as a student athlete to merit a full athletic scholarship to college and graduated cum laude. She used that degree to give back to her community, serving them in mental health and social work before running for City Council. We need more people with Jovanka’s passion and commitment to the community in the State Assembly."
"As a Latina immigrant myself from Panama at the age of nine, I am most gratified that the California Latino Legislative Caucus in Sacramento has endorsed my campaign to become the representative for Assembly District 15 on November 6,” Councilmember Beckles responded. "At time of enormous stress on LatinX families, I admire what the Latino Caucus is doing to push back against racism and bigotry and push forward to supporting our dignity and accomplishments. As Chairman Hueso has said, 'As a Caucus we continue to be troubled, but sadly not surprised, by the Trump Administration’s vicious and cynical efforts to leverage the lives of immigrant children in an effort to push his un-American agenda.'
Jovanka added, "I am a collaborator in my political life, and to that end I appreciate that the Latino Caucus has joined with the Legislative Women’s, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Jewish and LGBT Caucuses in denouncing Trump Administration maneuvers on immigration policies that rip families apart at the border. I have also been endorsed by the Legislative Black Caucus in this election and together we can all make our voices heard and make our lives better!
"I often cite the Ethiopian proverb: 'When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.'"
