In this important election year, I invite you to meet Jovanka Beckles, Vice-Mayor and
member of the Richmond City Council who is running for the vacant 15th Assembly
District seat. The incumbent, Assemblyman Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond), is running
to be the next Superintendent of Public Instruction. Assembly District
15 includes the cities of Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Emeryville, Hercules, Piedmont,
Pinole, Richmond, San Pablo, and a portion of Oakland.
First elected to her Richmond council seat in 2010, Beckles has been a
progressive voice helping to pass a local rent control measure and calling for greater
scrutiny of refinery owner Chevron, which spent more than $3 million to try to defeat her
in 2014. Big Soda spent millions as she campaigned to tax their deeply unhealthy
products and invest the funds in nutrition and youth athletics.
Working with law enforcement, she created the Richmond Municipal ID Program that allows immigrants to
safely identify themselves to the police. She introduced and led the effort to raise the
minimum wage. She does not take contributions from corporations and never
We hope that you will come to meet Jovanka on July 1st and get to know her as a
viable progressive candidate. The 2018 election is very important on so many
levels-- City, State and National.
